The History of Cancel Culture Urban Dictionary

It is not uncommon to find the culture of cancel culture in the United States. Many terms and expressions have become so embedded in our language, that they have come to represent normal use rather than an antiquated or specific usage. As such, some would call a cultural attitude a “Cancel Culture”. For example:

“Canceled” has become the default term when we refer to someone who has been fired from their job. The word “canceled” has thus become synonymous with unemployment. But did our forefathers ever experience unemployment? And did they ever experience unemployment due to bad decisions, bad timing, or missing the original “Punch Line”? No, because no such thing as unemployment exists in our society today and no such thing as a “Canceled Culture” exists either.

When you mention a culture, then what comes to mind is most often a group, an authority, or an individual. Therefore, we have “Canceled Culture” where there is social media, which promotes and normalizes the use of social media by individuals to communicate with others and businesses to advertise themselves through social media outlets. However, when you mention a culture it means a group or an authority. Therefore, we have “Canceled Culture” where there is no longer a social media culture.

You might ask why someone would be interested in using a “Cancel Culture”. Well, because it cancels out the idea that a person can make mistakes, be wrong, or be embarrassed. The idea that a mistake can happen and be corrected is no longer used by our society, so instead people invent “Canceled Culture” to describe things that are done incorrectly. In fact, our educational system now encourages the cancellation of any education that contains elements of diversity. Because no one was willing to teach us that there are mistakes or to take that risk, we have invented the word “Canceled Culture” to describe those things. Therefore, I ask, “Is canceling culture worth it?''

The definition of culture is all of the values, beliefs, customs, organizations, etc. that a society puts emphasis on. For instance, you may believe that your society has certain values such as honesty, respect, sharing, etc. When you study the definition of culture, it states that it is “the general patterns of behavior observed in a community over time”.

This is very useful in that it allows for a very easy comparison. Let's say you went to Africa and were taught that honesty is a virtue. If you were to go back 2 decades later and tell that same community that they should respect honesty because that is what their culture was based on, you would find that many did just that. Therefore, you can see that the concept of cultural replacement is very useful in understanding the concept of culture. In other words, you can learn from other cultures and apply it to your own.

Unfortunately, there is still a lot of canceling culture out there. It is a little like the old belief that all cultures are bad. Well, that is not true; there are some cultures that do good. Therefore, in order to properly participate in the culture you need to be aware of the good and bad characteristics of each culture, and then use them to counteract the bad ones.

For instance, you might say that Spain is a very Catholic country. Well, this is true as far as the religion is concerned but consider how many Christians there are in that country. Therefore, cultural replacement may be necessary to keep a balance in the country. Indeed, this is why it is so important to know the definitions of culture before deciding what to do about a given culture. Please consider all this.
